You Take The Wheel and I Will Take The Pedals...

When I was 9, Dad decided it was time for me to become a man and learn how to drive.  Lucky for me, we got to drive the future death trap of a car which I fell in love with - a 1986 Ford Mustang LX.  I want to say that this was right after we bought the car  and before years of neglect would make my Mom so nervous that she wouldn't drive or get into the car unless I was driving.

My Dad got tasked with taking me to Sunday school at a local church.  It was an easy 5-7 minute drive from my house.  Dad asked me if I wanted to drive and I said "Yes!" enthusiastically.  I got behind the wheel, he got into the passenger's side seat, and he then taught me the basics of driving.

"The most important thing that you will ever - EVER - learn about driving is the brake.  You will always put your foot on the break.  You don't have to press the gas.  The car will go by itself."

So, with this newly acquired knowledge, I put my foot on the brake, and proceeded to turn the car on.  *Boom* It started!  Cool.  So, I throw it into reverse and keep my foot on the brake the entire time; allowing the car to go by itself just like my Dad taught me.  I then stopped and put the car into drive.

We started creeping out of the drive onto the main street of Gault Lane and we approached a stop sign.  Once we made it to the intersection, my dad added, "Ok, now when I tell you turn the wheel hard to the right and press on the gas then just let go of the wheel once you've made the turn."  Oh, I forgot to mention that I could barely see over the dashboard of the car while I'm driving .

So, I got to step on the gas and turn right as a car approached the intersection.  I turn the wheel and let my arms cross and punch it almost hitting the other car.  My Dad lunges over and grab the wheel and turns the car in the nick of time to avoid oncoming traffic while yelling at me.    We get out to the intersection and make it to the next stop sign.  I put the car in park and switch with my Dad.

Normally I would feel awful as my Dad was yelling at me, but in this case, I was proud as hell.  I was the only 9 year old I knew of who's father tried teaching them how to drive.

I'm hoping to teach AKV when he's 6.

Parental Advisory

Over the last few months I've begun to notice a shift in my own life regarding what I consider important and what I don't.  It's kind of weird because I feel the old me fighting to remain right where it is vs. the new me taking over.  As Biz Markie says, "Me me me me me me me me me me me me me me vs. me".

This week I canceled my first audition ever in the last 4 years due to an unforeseen family scheduling conflict.  The weird thing was that I knew it was the right thing to do, and I paid no attention to the consequences of doing it on such short notice.  I called them at the theatre company, left a mesasge, and sent an email notifying them of my absence.  It was rather liberating operating out of love vs. fear.

I've also have been falling in love with Son-Son more and more everyday.  He's becoming more of a man everyday and I just want to be with him more and more!  It's an awesome feeling to have him look up at me and get a huge smile and holding his arms up to have me pick him up and twirl him around.  I've been taking more time off from the computer and TV and just hanging with him unadulteratedly.  I feel closer to him than ever.

The weird thing that caught me off guard was my strong reactions to hearing stories on the news or reading news online regarding harm to children.  I get all worked up thinking about any harm coming to AKV.   What am I going to do when I have a girl?  Are the pole dancers going to see my occasional patronage discontinued?

When I was told repeatedly "Everything changes when you have kids", I knew that I was ready for a change.  It's nice ot see that change be so natural and welcomed.

Another Collection of Thoughts

Try as I may, this blog has become cumbersome to maintain *cue Seven Mary Three*.  Okay, enough bitchin'...

The Passing of DJ AM
Uhm, why must I become subjected to non-stop media coverage to care about this guy?  I never even really heard of him until after he almost went up in a thunderball along with Travis Barker, who I have heard of and respect highly, a few months ago.  I'm not saying him dying isn't a sad thing as he obviously was talented; however, he seems to be getting MJ coverage lately.  Hopefully it'll take them less than 6 weeks after his passing to bury him.

Billy Corgan's Spirits in the Sky Shows
My favorite Pumpkin (only first to Jimmy) is touring with a group of musicians that include Dave Navarro of Jane's Addiction/Red Hot Chili Peppers fame and the newly appointed Smashing Pumpkin throne master Mike Byrne along with a member of Strawberry Alarm Clock (of Incense and Peppermints fame).  They've been playing incredibly small cafe's/clubs and playing all kinds of music.  Supposedly some of the newest  original songs being played may end up on the next Pumpkins disc.  I haven't been downloading any of the bootlegs for these as I would rather wait until I hear the Pumpkin King's full vision for it.  I have to admit that I would be excited to hear Dave guest on the next Pumpkins record as both Billy and Dave are metal guys at heart.

Everything Hates Nelson
As of late, it seems that I have slipped back into my old habit of hating everything again.    I find myself taking things way too seriously and allowing myself to be content with the fact I can't (read that as shouldn't want to) control everything I'm involved in.  I should accept that the universe has puts actions in my life for a reason and try to figure out what that reason should be.  I've been surrounded by new levels of unprofessionalism, apathy, laziness, and ignorance.  I've allowed thees items to get me down.  Perhaps I need to get down to lift myself back up.  Who knows.  The point is that I feel like I'm being tested and am failing miserably at letting go of my fears.  I'll continue working on it.

Gear Buying
Lately I've been eying a lot of new gear to buy.  I've got a new guitar which sounds fantasic and a new Line 6 amp.  I want to get one more guitar before I start dreaming of buying the more expensive stuff.  I would like to get a few more guitar pedals as well.  MORE is always...MORE!

The Chronicles of Mixerman
I finished reading this book and it's hands down one of my favorite books ever.   It's a hardbook collection of anecdotes of an LA audio engineer trying to record a major label band's first record.  It's so funny how much of it I can relate with especially the idiocy of the musicians and staff participating in the session.  It's just funny how much ego can complicate things.    Get more info at http://www.mixerman.net.

Being Daddy
I like being a Dad.  It's awesome.  I recommend it to those who want it.

Life on the Roll

I forgot just how much I enjoy rollerblading. I've been getting plump over the summer and felt I needed a change, so, I strapped on the 'blades one morning, put my son in hos stroller, and off we went. It was so much fun I went out again later that day and just went on my own. I'm feeling it this morning however :)

Gearing Up For Some Excitement

Here's the short list of what's going on in my life:
Mom coming in for a 1.5 weeks tomorrow.  Want to get to know me better, just ask Mom?
Just picked out the new hardwood floors we want to get.  Got a check for half of what  need to make it happen.  Fawk it.  We waited this long so we might as well go for it and see what happens with the insurance company.
Promoting Recap's new musical "Rock Opera:The Musical", Static Republic's two shows in July and August, and getting the bug to finish up the Courageous Rue Mixtape '09.  It's exciting!
I'm still having a hard time maintaining my blog here :(  If you want to stay in touch with me more regularly, follow me on Twitter.  The Nelson V website is still under consideration.
That's it folks.  Sorry for the blandness.  I'm tired and need to go bed
